Making
room Space
for our dual coolers

The candidate for this project is 1980
911 SC that has a 3.6 liter conversion. The 3.6 needs a lot of
cooler even on the street, this car sees occasional track duty so
extra capacity is a must.
The installation will be similar for
other year cars, however the OEM equipment in the fenders may be
different than shown.
This
1980 SC had a factory "trombone" type external cooler and
all the supporting oil lines and thermostat already in
place. Our installation will simply connect to the
existing hard lines in the passenger wheel well, replacing the old
trombone cooler.
Cars
not equipped with a factory external oil cooler would use our Basic
Plumbing Kit to complete the installation.
We
start the project by clearing space on both sides in preparation for
the coolers.

We'll
be installing this pair of Widemouth
Carrera coolers. One in each fender.
Passenger side mounts conventionally, driver side mounts
upside down as shown for ease of hose routing.
|
 |
Bumper
is removed for access. Driver side has the windshield
spray reservoir and emissions canister in the way.
These need to be relocated to make room for the cooler.
|
 |
The
reservoir and emissions canister, removed. These
are very large and can be moved to the trunk. You may
want to substitute a smaller container for the reservoir.
|
 |
Passenger
side horns need to be relocated for clearance. A
little bending of the mounts and you can point the
horns forward as shown, providing clearance for the cooler.
