Monterey or Bust!
Impossible
schedule '73 911 Outlaw

April
10, 21 days to go
Sore
fingers
20
hours of work since the last update. The progress is
considerable even if the car looks about the same.
There
are exactly two types of early 911s; those with rust and those with owners
who haven't found the rust yet. These early cars rust in plenty of places that
aren't visible until the car is disassembled. This one is no
exception. The good news is that the found rust is limited and
easily dealt with. The brown stuff in the pictures is primer.
In this case some rot was discovered on the rear shelf and in the
rear window channel. Both sections have been cut and out and
new metal welded in.
Additional
welding was done to fill holes left by the rocker panel covers
(which won't be going back on) and long removed air conditioning
hoses.
The
devil is in the details. A lot of time was spent prepping the door
jambs and window channels. Lot's of spray-can undercoating had to be
painstakingly removed. Window channels are notorious for rusting so
they've been thoroughly stripped and rust inhibitor.
The
entire shell has been block sanded and is ready for a bit of
polyester filler to address some minor issues.

This area and the
door jams were covered with spray on rust proofing. Removal
was a painful process using heat gun, chemical stripping,
and sandpaper. I curse the bastard that sprayed it in!
|
 |
All window frames
have been stripped largely to bare metal and treated with
rust inhibitor. The good news is that limited rust was
found.
|
 |
Rear quarter
windows and rear window received the same treatment.
|
 |
Notice the corner
of the rear window channel is cut out. It had some cancer
and will be replaced.
|
 |
The patch panel
tacked in place.
|
 |
Here is that same
corner after welding and cleanup with a grinder.
Almost perfect.
|
 |
The rear shelf
also had a spot of cancer.
|
 |
A bit of work with
a cutoff wheel and the cancer is gone.
|
 |
The patch welded
in place. This one was much harder to do since the area is
barely accessible.
|
 |
Here is our
enthusiastic welder working on the rocker panels.
|
 |
Holes in the
rockers and wheel wells are welded up. This picture is
prior to grinding. The holes are from rocker panel
trim that will remain off and removed AC hoses.
