April
17, 15 days to go
Ready
to paint
6
days since the last update, but not for lack of work or
progress. Predictably, everything is taking longer than
expected. Right now the car is two days behind plan, largely
due to a refusal to cut any corners. Do it right or don't do
it! The recovery plan has been to work late nights, typically
till 1:00 am or so. You'll notice all the pictures are taken
at night under the lights.
The
shell has been prepped for painting, this was expected to be the
lengthiest part of the project. Some minor bodywork and lots
of sanding. None of that was very photogenic and any pictures would
have looked essentially the same as the previous update.
Now
with the bodywork complete, POR15 was applied in the trunk floor,
fender channels, window channels and other rust-prone areas.
The car has been taped, bare metal primed, and is ready for sealer
and paint.
A
great deal of time was spent on the door jams and window channels. I
believe this makes a huge difference in the quality of the finished
job. Attention to detail makes all the difference.
The
paint has been purchased and will be sprayed tomorrow. The car
will be painted in Gulf blue and Gulf orange, a personal
favorite.
The
paint cans were opened to be sure the colors are correct.
First the blue - very subdued and relaxing. Then the orange
can was opened. The lid was barely cracked, it was as if
flames spewed out of the can! The orange is on fire and the
contrast with the blue is tremendous.

The
black stuff is POR15. It was applied to rust prone
areas including fender channels, window channels, and trunk
pan.
|
 |
Battery
box was removed to improve airflow to fender mounted
Widemouth oil cooler. A panel was welded in place and a
bracket fabricated to support the fender. A factory oil
cooler mount was welded to the fender. All treated with
POR15.

A lot
of attention to detail is evident in the door jams. These
were a mess - covered with undercoating that was then
painted over. Time consuming to clean but worth it.
These were sanded to bare metal.

 |
The
rear engine panel was also taken largely to bare
metal.

The
car is completely taped and ready for spraying.

of taping in the trunk. The harness remains in place.
|
 |
Engine
and trans are still in the car. This presents a challenge
since it is difficult to tape off this area. A box was
built around them to protect against overspray.
