Oil Cooling

Excellent oil cooling capacity would be critical for this car because it will see heavy track use in the heat of California desert.  A Setrab center mounted cooler was considered. Center mounts can provide the greatest cooling capacity due to superior airflow.  Had we built the car with a 3.2 liter or larger motor, the center mount would have been the best choice.

We are running a 2.4 liter motor with plans to expand to 2.7 liters.  In the final analysis the decision was to go with a fender mounted Widemouth oil cooler in combination with finned oil lines.  With proper ducting this combination should provide plenty of capacity for our power-plant while providing superior weight distribution and better protection for the cooler than a center mounted solution.

Widemouth oil cooler is fit into the fender using mounting kit and stone guard kit.  In combination with finned oil lines, this cooler will provide good capacity for this 2.4 motor on track.

Back of headlight bucket is removed to force extra air through the cooler when the headlight is removed.  At track speeds this is good for about 15 F reduction in oil temperature.  The headlight remains in place for the reduced demands of street driving.

Finned oil lines hug the chassis just like factory lines and use factory mounting clamps.  Finned oil lines enhance heat dissipation and hang in the fast moving air-stream under the car.

Front of rear well shows thermostat and connections.  Finned oil line purge valve allows dirty oil to be evacuated from the system when doing an oil change using a blast of compressed air.

Rear of well shows factory oil lines to oil tank and crankcase.

Front well shows detail of mounting clamps and fit of finned oil lines.
