External Oil Cooling
Configuration Guide Adding
finned oil lines and external cooler on any 911 from '65 to '89

Finned
oil lines¹ and the Widemouth
oil cooler may be installed on all 911s produced between 1965 and
1989. They are a direct bolt-on for cars already equipped with the
1974 to 1989 style external thermostat and trombone, brass tube, or
Carrera fender mounted oil
cooler. Other configurations may require installation of additional
plumbing and equipment to implement a complete oil cooling
system. In general, cars not equipped with factory external
coolers should upgrade to the 1974 to 1989 oil plumbing.
Finned
oil lines are available in two configurations; 74-89 type and pre-74
type. 74-89
type finned oil lines have female fittings at the thermostat end are
designed for direct connection to the 74-89 style external
thermostat. Pre-74 type finned oil lines have male fittings at the
thermostat end to accommodate easy connection of fabricated flex
hoses. Both types have male fittings at the fender end.
Following
is a table of sample solutions referenced to year and
type of external thermostat equipped. Find the year of your car and
its original equipment configuration in the table, then review the
recommended solution and diagrams. Sample
solutions show suggested oil plumbing configurations and recommend
the correct finned oil line version.

Factory thermostat
ER
= Elephant Racing finned oil lines, 74-89 type
A
= Factory oil line from thermostat to scavenge pump
B
= Factory S hose from oil tank to internal oil cooler
C
= 74 to 89 Factory flex hoses
D
= Factory oil line from thermostat to oil tank
OT
= Factory oil tank
FT
= 74-89 Factory external thermostat
OC
= Elephant Racing Widemouth oil cooler
Recommended
configuration for these vehicles:
Notes
-
a)
Pre 72 cars have 26mm fittings at the scavenge pump
end of A. If so equipped, replace the case fitting with the later 30mm
fitting Porsche #999 136 008 00. Use the later style 30mm line A.
b)
Pre 72 cars have 26mm fittings at the oil tank end of D. If so
equipped, use our 26mm
to 30mm adapter to convert to 30mm and use the later style 30mm line
D.
c)
Several configurations of Line A exist, most are composed of two
pieces joined by a fitting. Beginning in 75, line A routes differently
than shown in the drawing. Any year 911 using early heat exchangers,
SSIs, or headers should
use the 74 two piece configuration routed as shown.

a)
Installation requires fabrication of two flexible hoses to connect
finned oil lines to factory thermostat. Fabricated hoses require 30mm
female hose ends and our 26mm
to 30mm adapter at the
thermostat end.
b)
Be sure to order pre-74 type Elephant Racing finned oil lines which
are equipped with male fittings at both ends.
